Fight for Freedoom

Hey Campers:

June 28. We awoke to a beautiful day after a major storm last night. VA has a campaign that they are the “Love” state. REALLY! The way some of these people drive they need lots of love. Every time we get on the freeway we see a accident. Many are driving with the phone glued to their head. Is this just illegal in Cally???

We took off to the Fredericksburg battlefield. The question is why have a battle in Fredericksburg? Well, it is lays on the Rappahannock River. This is midway between the Capital of Washington and Richmond. Most of VA’s transportation was funneled through this river. Mountains confined the armies to the east. The Chesapeake and Potomac Rivers to the east. This made Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania counties one of the bloodiest landscape in the North America. 4 battles were fought. Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania and Wilderness. The south had Robert E. Lee as their general and he repelled the Union many times. But wait! Who is coming??? U.S. Grant. Brother man took control and pushed further than any general.

Can you imagine you and your kids going to the war site to see your loved one? Talk about crazy. People had no concept of what the war was really like. Hookers would go anywhere. These women were described as “lacking voucher of respectability”.  Ya think! But, in all fairness, if men didn’t want them there they would not have lasted long. Hmmm. What diseases was carried?
Did you know that the Civil War was the first large scale coverage of news correspondence? The news was handled by newsboys, photography, illustrations, telegraph, signal flags and torches. Does anyone know who Matthew Brady was? He was one of first photographers to capture the war in photography.

Sometimes a drum was used to communicate on the battlefield. The drum was able to penetrate over the noise. It could save move forward in battle or fall back. What is weird is the Union had a band. It would play to cheer up the soldiers. Sometimes if they knew the Confederate soldiers were nearby they would strike up the Dixie song for them to hear. Other times Union/Confederate soldiers would build toy boats so they could trade goods with each other over the rivers. Or the soldiers would cross over rivers to barter with other. In the earlier years of the war, Union/Confederate generals would stop and have lunch together since they were usually old friends or classmates. Well. One would think they could have set down and discussed the issues to stop the war. This sure would have saved many lives.

Most soldiers did fight all the time. They had time for reading, writing letters for home and camp duties. Union had more food than the Confederacy due to the blockades. Did you know that there was a “Great Revival in Lee’s army in 1863? Even Stonewall Jackson who was a staunched Presbyterian encouraged his men to have devotions. War can definitely change how you see your life. One of the soldiers stated “A man certainly stands much more needed of religion in the army than he does at home.” Did you know that more men died in the 4 battlefields named above than the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican and Indian Wars combined? Lord what a waste of human life.

The Confederates were shield behind this stone wall. There is a monument dedicated to a Confederate officer named Richard Kirkland. He was known as the “Angel of Marye’s Heights.” For 2 days after the battle at Fredericksburg, Union soldiers were caught between the lines. They were crying for water. Richard took it upon his self to help them. He filled up canteens and stepped over the wall to care for them. When the Union soldiers saw what he was doing they stopped shooting at him and gave cheers. Even in battle there can be some show of God’s grace.

”The muffled drum’s sad roll has beat the soldier’s last tattoo. No more on life’s parade shall meet, that brave and fallen few”. “No vision of the morrow’s strife, the warriors dreams alarms. No braying horn nor screaming fife at dawn to call arms.”

We drove on to Spotsylvania and Chancellorsville battlefield. Robert E. Lee had his greatest triumph here. Even though he was out numbered he split his men and won the battle. Stonewall Jackson was also at Chancellorsville. He was wounded by “friendly fire” about May 2, 1863 at 9:30 PM. He had just brilliantly executed a flanking maneuver against the union. He and8 aides were returning to camp. A fight broke out and the group was mistaken as the “enemy”. It killed 4 aides and badly wounded Jackson. He had to have is left arm amputated. He died 8 days later from the infection.

Drove on to Culpepper and Warrenton. Luckily these towns so very little war actions. Warrenton is famous for John Mosby. He would go behind the Union lines and attack/raid trains and wagons.

Drove on to Manassas National Battlefield Park (Bull Run). This was an amazing place. Inside the museum was information on the strategy on how the battle was fought. They had the land laid out and lights would show where troops advanced and fall back. How  After touring the museum I wanted to tour the battlefield. Well, just my luck it started to storm. Lorenzo decided he was going to the car. I was not going to let rain and thunder stop me. I have that Cally fortitude. I got my umbrella out and just started to walk. It was so quite in the meadow. It was almost like being in a peaceful place, even though I knew a great battle had been fought here. When I rounded the bend and so the statue of Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson it almost stopped me in my tracks. It is a breath taking tribute to the south’s famous general. They said the meadow has changed very little since the war.

Here is a little history of the area: *April 1861, a deadly conflict erupted. Confederate soldiers were recruited on the Brentsville Courthouse lawn. On a hot day in July, the sleepy railroad community of Manassas Junction found itself on the fore front of American history. During the battle of First Manassas/Bull Run, the first major land battle of the Civil War, about 4,000 people were killed, wounded, captured or reported missing. 13 months later the armies clashed again when the Confederates marched through Thoroughfare Gap to the familiar ground of the First Battle of Manassas. This time under the command of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, they lay in wait behind an unfinished railroad grade. The Confederate troops surprise the Union troops who were under Major General John Pope. The Second Battle of Manassas had begun. Four times larger than the first battle. There 120,000 men fighting for two ½ days. Nearly 24,000 soldiers were wounded or killed.

By the time we got back to the Hilton 4, we were tired. This Civil War Trail hunting is a lot of work. But I am really enjoying it.

Well Campers. Until the next time

Good Bye Mickey

Hey there Campers;

June 18- 20 - Well, I hope all is well with you. We have spent the last 5 days in Disney World. To say the least I am tapped on the mouse for a while. On  Tuesday /Wed we went to Hollywood Studios and had a great time. I actually like the shows. This theme park is all about the Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies. They also had a whole show and museum on Walt Disney: One Man's Dream. It as about how he started with a mouse named Mortimer. Disney's wife Lillian thought the name was too pretentious. So she suggested that the name Mickey. Walt and his wife were on their way from NY by train. Disney had plenty time to think. By the time they arrived in Los Angeles Mickey Mouse was born.

Did you know that Walt Disney failed at many things before finally having a hit with the movie Fantasia. That movie help him to build Disney studios. He never looked at failure as a option. That is something we all could apply to our lives.

There was this cool ride called - The Great Movie Ride. For you black and white movie, musical, and sci-fi lovers you would have thought you died and went to heaven. The ride was based on our old favorites, i.e

Casablanca, Singing in the Rain, John Wayne, James Cagney and more. Yep that was the good old days before Vampires, blood and guts, etc. Oh for some of those old movies again. No need to worry. That's why there is Netflix and Amazon.

Have you ever wonder what your toys are doing while you are asleep. Well look no further than Toy Story. Like Disneyland there is Toy Mania ride. This is a game where you are in a toy shooting for a high score. (Remember those old carnival shooting.) Same premises. This was such fun that we had to ride it twice. Now, please explain to me that I was more accurate in my shooting but Lo got more points than me??? Huh?? I hit big targets too....

We decided to go back to Epcot to see the evening show. Have you ever been inside the big ball at Epcot. We hadn't done it in all the times we went DW because the lines were always long so we tried. If you really like history, it is really great except for the first 2 mins. They start with the "Big Bang" theory. Can they not read the bible? From there it takes you to the present time. Very interesting. Epco puts on a evening show about the world and how we are part it whether we like it or now. I always like how they bring out the world in the middle of the lagoon and show pictures of how connected the world is. The show ends in beautiful fireworks.

On Thursday, we had breakfast with Alex's brother and family. Both families are returning to Cally soon. If you have not tried the Cracker Barrel please drive do not walk to a restaurant soon. I am so sorry they are not in Cally. You get the greatest bang for your buck there. I know I said this before, but they are that good.

We decided to head back to the Animal Kingdom for one last day. Talk about Poppy love.

Lani Girl wanted to have a ride with Poppy. So Lo got in the dinosaur with her.

Sharelle had a high school friend and her family living in Tampa come for the day to hang with us. Since Lani Girl had kids her age she really had a good time. We hit all of the conservation areas.I learned a lot about conversation. I so appreciated the time an effort DW has put in the animal world. They had a booklet for kids to find plant life, animal facts, etc. The kids moved from station to station all over the park to earn badge's for their booklets. All of the DW cast members spoke with the kids like they were real people.I know they get paid but by the end of the day these cast members still cared. I guess that is why they got hired.

Now wouldn't you know it. It started to storm just as we were trying to leave. In Florida, there is no such thing as wait until it stops. Ya just have to wait for it to slow down and run like you have the devil on your tail to reach your car. I am so glad that I spent the last month on the treadmill at level 4.5 to be able to power walk through the rain. Still got trenched.

Well Campers until next time

Animals in the Kingdom

Hey there Campers;

June 17 - We start our day at Disney's Animal Kingdom with clear skies. Alex's brother, Milton, wife Cecil and kids met up with us for a fun family day. We ran to the Africa Safari ride as our first adventure for the day. We wanted to be sure the animals would be out. I was kind of cool to jump in the jeep and have a guide explain about the animals, how they live and survive.

Did you know that termites build clay homes as tall as giraffes? Amazing. These little buggers love eating wood. Trust me you don't want to invite them home for dinner. You may wake up homeless.

Can you imagine being preggers for 22 months? Well, that is how long  an elephant can go. Hmmm... Birthing 500 lbs. of calf. Can't say I envy them. Maybe that is why they have good memories. Too much time on their hands.

Did you know hippos can stay underwater for 8-9 mins at a time? Why you ask. Because they really have dry skin moisturizing. I must have some hippo in me. I love my feet to stay moist.

The Lions were kicking back and chillin. I know those Gazelles were glad they are in Disney's Animal Kingdom so they don't have to run for their lives.  No eating each other in Mickey's house.

What animal has a butt like a human? Check out the Gorilla. I don't care what evolution says. They are not my kin. Some of my folk may act like time some times. But they are still not my kin.

Giraffe have the most graceful necks. They just have to deal with those brown aging spots!!

There was a great bird show called Flights of Wonder. For you bird lovers you could spend the whole day in this area. So many birds so little time.

We went to see a Bug's Life. There is Elly Girl getting a free ride from her mom Sharelle.

Disney on Parade

OK.  Is it me or are those rats, sorry I mean chipmunks following us to each park???

Disney knows how to put on shows. We saw the Finding Nemo musical.

But the Festival of the Lion King Musical is the absolute best. It is worth every penny of the parks cost. It is a small version of the stage play. This is my second time seeing it and I still love it.

If you come to Disney World, the Animal Kingdom is a must see.

I felt like one of the people on Wild Kratts today. So you are thinking what the heck??? Who are the Wild Kratts? Well if you don't know check out the PBS station for more info. OR ask your kids. My granddaughter Lani Girl has me hooked on it.

Well campers until next time.
